The next morning the bird’s chatter awoke them as usual.

“I don’t see the blue birds. Perhaps, you saw something else in the dark,” Lumina said as she rose to refresh herself.

“Perhaps.” Staring up into the branches Malick saw only yellow fruit and small birds. Then, he realized the yellow fruit wouldn’t emit a heat signature. The great birds watching overhead were the same yellow coloring as the fruit. They actually were good at hiding from everyone but Kitty and himself.

Nearing midday, Malick perceived the forest was getting lighter and to the east a little redder. The smell of smoke had increased steadily. The end to the main trap rope had happened somewhere behind them; he had missed it entirely.

A few minutes later, his team came upon a spectacle that put everything they had previously seen on Sworld to shame. Standing around a tree well, they looked across a branch that extended 1,000 feet east and which was at least fifty feet in diameter. The massive branch extended to a tree that made the rest of the Colossal forest seem trifling. It stood alone in the center of a circular meadow half a mile in diameter. Nine mammoth branches extended from it to the surrounding Colossal forest. Malick named the tree Colossal because of its unimaginable size. The tree in the center of the meadow would rightly be named Leviathan.
